Captain Paul's afternoon fishing charter out of Mastic Beach gives you four solid hours on some of Long Island's most productive inshore waters. This isn't just another cookie-cutter trip – Paul knows exactly where the fish are holding in the bays and inlets around Mastic Beach, and he's not afraid to move around until you're hooked up. Whether you're bringing the kids for their first taste of saltwater fishing or you're a seasoned angler looking for consistent action, this PM departure hits the sweet spot for variety and results.
Your 12:00 PM departure gives you the entire afternoon to work the prime feeding times when Striped Bass, Bluefish, and Flounder are most active. Paul provides all the rods, reels, and tackle you'll need, plus your New York fishing license is covered in the trip cost. The boat accommodates up to four anglers, so you get that personal attention that makes all the difference when you're learning new techniques or trying to land that trophy fish. Bring your polarized sunglasses, some non-spray sunscreen, and whatever snacks and drinks you want for the trip. Paul's got the fishing side handled – he'll move you between productive spots until you're consistently putting fish in the cooler.
The beauty of Mastic Beach's inshore waters is the variety of structure and depth changes that hold different species throughout the day. Paul works everything from shallow flats where flounder cruise for baitfish to deeper channels where stripers stage during tide changes. You'll be using a mix of live bait, cut bait, and artificials depending on what's working best. The tackle setup varies by target species – lighter spinning gear for scup and smaller stripers, beefier setups when the bluefish are chopping or when you hook into a keeper striper. Paul reads the water conditions and adjusts tactics on the fly, which is why his clients consistently outfish the party boats and other charters in the area.
"We had an awesome day on the water with Captain Paul! The boat may be older, but it's been recently re-powered and ran great, giving us a smooth and comfortable ride. He worked hard throughout the trip, moving us to four different spots, and each one delivered fish. The standout catch was a 26-inch doormat fluke—definitely one to remember. It's clear he knows these waters inside and out and is focused on making sure everyone enjoys the trip. Highly recommend booking with Captain Paul for a fun and productive day!" - Lawrence
"We were searching for a private charter on Long Island for my son and his dad, who uses a wheelchair, and that's when we found Captain Paul. He reached out right away and shared that he had been working on ways to accommodate wheelchair access, which meant so much to us. Thanks to his effort and care, my son and his dad enjoyed an experience we truly didn't think would be possible. It's something we'll always be thankful for." - Michael
"Captain Paul made our Father's Day truly special. He had all the gear ready, walked us through everything we needed to know, and made sure we were comfortable the entire time. We're already planning to book another trip with him!" - Venus
Striped Bass are the crown jewel of Long Island's inshore fishing scene, and the waters around Mastic Beach hold some real quality fish. These fighters typically run between 18 and 30 inches in this area, with the occasional cow pushing over that magic 28-inch mark. Stripers are most active during moving water – incoming tide brings baitfish into the bays, and that's when you'll see the best action. They're ambush predators that use structure like channel edges, drop-offs, and submerged rocks to corner their prey. What makes catching stripers so addictive is their fight – they'll make strong runs, shake their heads, and give you everything they've got right up to the boat.
Bluefish bring the aggression factor to your trip, and when they're feeding, the action gets wild fast. These toothy predators travel in schools and can turn a quiet fishing spot into a feeding frenzy in minutes. Mastic Beach blues typically range from snapper size up to 5-pound choppers that'll test your drag and your nerves. They're most active during warmer months and love to crash baitfish schools near the surface. The key with bluefish is being ready – they bite hard and fast, but they can disappear just as quickly as they showed up.
Southern Flounder, or "fluke" as most Long Island anglers call them, are the bottom-dwelling prize that keeps people coming back. These flatfish are masters of camouflage, burying themselves in sand and waiting for baitfish to swim overhead. A keeper fluke runs 19 inches or better, but the real trophies – those doormat fluke over 24 inches – are what dreams are made of. Fluke fishing requires patience and finesse, working your bait along the bottom and feeling for that subtle tap that signals a fish picking up your offering. The waters around Mastic Beach have the sandy bottom and current flow that fluke love, making it prime real estate for targeting these prized flatfish.
Scup, also known as porgy, provide consistent action when other species might be finicky. These silvery bottom fish school up in good numbers and are perfect for keeping kids engaged and building confidence. While they're not the biggest fish you'll catch, scup are excellent table fare and fight harder than their size suggests. Black Sea Bass round out the mix as another bottom species that's both fun to catch and great to eat. These fish prefer structure and will often be found around the same areas that hold fluke, though they tend to stay tighter to hard bottom and rocky areas.

Captain Paul was a fantastic addition to our family outing. The trip was just right for my daughters and me—we caught plenty of fish and came away with a whole new appreciation for being out on the water.

The bass didn’t cooperate, but Captain Paul quickly adjusted and got us on the fluke instead.

Black sea bass are chunky, hard-fighting bottom dwellers that hang around wrecks, jetties, and rocky structure. These dark, mottled fish typically run 1-4 pounds with big mouths and an appetite for crabs, squid, and small fish. Late spring through summer is prime time when they move into shallower water to spawn. What makes them special is their scrappy fight - they'll pull hard straight down trying to get back to structure. They're also some of the best eating fish in our waters with firm, white meat. Here's the key: fish right on the bottom with squid or clam, and be ready to turn their head quickly once hooked - if they get back into the rocks, you'll lose them every time.

Bluefish are aggressive predators that'll give you some of the most action-packed fishing around here. These blue-green torpedoes average 3-8 pounds with razor-sharp teeth and an attitude to match. They travel in schools, attacking baitfish in feeding frenzies that turn the water into chaos. Summer through early fall is peak season when they're feeding heavily in our bays and along the surf. What guests love most is the non-stop action - when you find a school, everyone gets hooked up fast. They're also great eating when prepared fresh. Pro tip: use a wire leader or heavy fluorocarbon - those teeth will cut through regular line in seconds, and handle them carefully when unhooking.

Scup, or porgy as locals call them, are scrappy little fighters that make great family fishing. These silver fish with rainbow-colored scales typically run 12-16 inches and have small mouths packed with strong teeth for crushing shells. You'll find them around rocky bottoms, pilings, and structure from May through October when they move inshore. They're bottom feeders that love squid, clams, and worms. Kids especially enjoy scup because they bite readily and put up a solid fight for their size. Plus, they're excellent eating with sweet, firm meat. My tip: use small hooks and keep your bait right on the bottom - scup won't chase food very far, so get it down where they're feeding.

Flounder are one of the most unique fish we target - these flat, oval-shaped ambush predators have both eyes on one side of their head and can change color to match the bottom. Most run 15-18 inches, though we see some pushing 25 inches in deeper water. They bury themselves in sand and mud flats waiting to grab passing baitfish, shrimp, and crabs. Fall and early winter are best when they're fattening up before moving offshore. Guests love the challenge of finding these masters of disguise, and they make outstanding table fare with delicate, sweet meat. My secret: drift slowly over sandy bottoms with live minnows or strip baits, and watch for that subtle tap - flounder don't slam baits like other fish.

Striped bass are the crown jewel of our local waters, running 20-40 pounds on average with those distinctive dark stripes down their silver sides. These powerful swimmers love structure - you'll find them around jetties, drop-offs, and near moving water where baitfish gather. Spring through fall are prime time here, especially during their migration when they're feeding heavily. What makes stripers special is their strong fight and excellent table fare with sweet, flaky meat. They're smart fish that can be picky about bait, so I always tell guests to keep your drag loose at first - these fish will make a hard initial run that can snap your line if you're not ready for it.
